CSHS 2022 Conference
Welcome
Message from the Conference Chair:
Welcome to the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science (CSHS) 2022 National Conference!
The conference will take place from August 18 to 20, 2022. Our conference venue is the Lord Nelson Hotel and
Suites, 1515 South Park Street, Halifax, NS, B3J 2L2 (www.lordnelsonhotel.com). Halifax is the largest city in
Atlantic Canada and has a spectacular heritage and modern vibrancy to discover and enjoy (discoverhalifaxns.com).
The theme of the conference is Innovation in Canadian Horticulture and it reflects the diversified scientific
approaches that address most aspects of horticultural research. Our scientific program covers both applied and
fundamental pre- and post-harvest research and production in horticulture.
As Chair of the conference, I am delighted to welcome our invited Plenary Speakers: Dr. David Douches from
Michigan State University (USA), Dr. David De Koeyer from AAFC, Dr. Lasse Schulze from Cronos Group, Dr. Zamir
Punja from Simon Fraser University, Dr. Bob Bors from University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Jeffrey Coull from Weston
Family Foundation, Dr Zoë Migicovsky from Acadia University, Dr. Gustavo A. Lobos from University of Talca (Chile),
and Dr. Kathleen Kevany from Dalhousie University. I gratefully thank each and all of these speakers for accepting
the invitations and committing their time to highlight national and international research in horticulture.
To link fundamental and applied research, our Pre-Conference Tour will focus on visiting grape and wine, apple
and tree fruit, blueberry, haskap, and vegetable production facilities across Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley.
In addition to the renowned plenary speakers, I wish to thank the many scientists, graduate and undergraduate
students who submitted abstracts for talks and poster presentations, as well as the panelists of the wrap-up
targeted panel discussions on critical issues of importance to the sectors covered by the symposia and workshop.
The Symposia and Workshop are chaired by: Dr. Simone Castellarin (Fruit), Dr. Youbin Zheng (Cannabis and
High-Value Plants), Dr. Bourlaye Fofana and Dr. Benoit Bizimungu (Potato), Dr. Lord Abbey (Vegetable), and Dr.
Vasantha Rupasinghe (Haskap). I am very grateful to each of them for attracting the high profile plenary speakers.
Putting together this program took the hard work from our National Organizing Committee consisting of Dr.
Bourlaye Fofana (Conference Chair and CSHS Vice President), Dr. Youbin Zheng (CSHS President), Dr. Valerie Gravel
(Past CSHS President), Dr. Karen Tanino (Sponsor Committee Chair), Dr. Diane Edward (CSHS Treasurer), Dr. Lord
Abbey (CSHS Secretary), Dr. Shahrokh Khanizadeh (Website and Webmaster) and Raphael Ofoe (Student Committee
Chair), and from our Local Organizing Committee consisting of Dr. Beatrice Amyotte, Dr. Jung Song, Dr. Shawkat
Ali, and Dr. Lord Abbey. Many thanks to all committee members for their tireless work putting together the scientific
program. A special thanks to Dr. Beatrice Amyotte for coordinating the planning of the pre-conference tour.
I extend my warm thanks to the Sponsors who accepted to support us during this pandemic time. Their financial
and in-kind supports have helped us to reduce conference charges and to cover the student awards.
Finally, I wish to thank you all for attending the CSHS 2022 conference. Your contributions were essential for
the success of this event, and I hope you will enjoy your time with us in beautiful Halifax and the Annapolis Valley.
